Georgia stands with Ukraine in the preservation of its sovereignty and territorial integrity against Russian aggression. Georgia remains a steadfast friend and partner of Ukraine, with joint aspirations for Euro-Atlantic integration and shared challenges to overcome.

With Russian soldiers arriving at the Ukrainian border every day, Georgia has responded to the development in an appropriate and responsible manner. The Georgian Parliament recently adopted a resolution in support of Ukraine that condemns “any military intention” aimed against the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, while adding that “Preventing war in Ukraine should be the major concern of the international community.” The resolution was welcomed by the Ukrainian Foreign Minister, who noted Georgia’s own experiences with Russian aggression and thanked the Georgian parliament for its “resolved and focused reaction.”

Georgia has been vocal on the need for a united Euro-Atlantic stance against Russian designs for its own sphere of influence. “It is important that the international community remains united and consistent in their position, and they do so. During my visits to Brussels and the Baltic States, they were adamant in their private conversations with me that this position will not be revised and there can be no talk of any new sphere of influence. Spheres of influence are part of the history; they belong to the past,” Georgia’s Foreign Minister David Zalkaliani said during his trip to Brussels.

In working with regional partners against Russian aggression, Georgian President Salome Zurabishvili made a joint statement with Polish President Andrzej Duda that stressed the need for solidarity with Ukraine, de-escalation, and further cooperation. “Aggressive actions, threats, be it cyberattacks or a direct increase in military forces on the Ukrainian border, the activation of military forces on the Black Sea, all shows how provocative Russia’s current policy is, to which the whole European, Western world responds with negotiations. Efforts are being made to resolve the situation and de-escalate this tense situation. However, de-escalation, as well as peace talks, requires the readiness of both sides,” President Zurabishvili said.

Georgia will continue to stand by Ukraine while also upholding the nation’s right to determine its future free and whole. The Government of Georgia also continues to advocate that diplomacy remains the only mean to resolve the current situation and implores the international community to focus their efforts on a peaceful outcome in Ukraine.
