Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili announced that the Georgian government is currently working on a second national human rights strategy in continuation of Georgia’s progress in aligning with Euro-Atlantic values. Garibashvili committed his government to act as the guarantor of human rights and to continue to preserve and expand the rights of every Georgian.
The Prime Minister introduced this latest initiative during the Human Rights Forum in Tbilisi, where he noted past international efforts to protect human rights and emphasized Georgia’s commitment to working with international partners to further its domestic agenda. “We believe that together with the Georgian people and international partners, we will be able to overcome challenges and further accelerate the country’s democratic development and Euro-Atlantic integration,” Garibashvili stated.
The new human rights initiative builds off the National Human Rights Strategy for 2014-2020, the first initiative of its kind in Georgia, and encompasses a wide array range of rights protections. “The Georgian National Human Rights Strategy for 2014-2020 was based on the idea of human rights’ realization in everyday life, which defined the long-term priorities and objectives of the Georgian government,” said Garibashvili. In building off the successes of the initial National Human Rights Strategy, the Georgian government continues to demonstrate its commitment to the fundamental rights of all Georgians and the promotion of an equal and inclusive society.
Promoting the rights of all Georgians and ensuring a society where every individual is equal before the law remains a priority for the Georgian Government. As the Prime Minister said, “Protecting human rights and freedoms is our Government’s key priority. The Government of Georgia ensures equal, free, and decent conditions for Georgian citizens, regardless of their affiliations with one group or another, because we firmly believe that protecting the interests of all groups and individuals and looking after their rights is a must.”
Under the Prime Minister’s leadership, the Georgian government continues to advance key reforms that demonstrate Georgia’s commitment to advancing its democratic consolidation and Euro-Atlantic values. Echoing the international progress toward protecting human rights, Georgia remains dedicated to ensuring the inviolability of Georgian constitutional rights and institution-building grounded in democratic values.
