Newly-elected Parliamentary Speaker Kakha Kuchava got right to work charting an ambitious agenda for Parliament, starting with the immediate implementation of the political agreement negotiated by the European Union (EU), redistribution of the balance of power in the Parliament along different committees and, consequently, sharing of responsibility with the ruling party for the benefit of people of Georgia.
In a call for unity and cooperation between political parties, Speaker Kuchava said, “I hope that all the political forces that are represented in the parliament today and which, I hope, will join us, will be able to work in the interests of the country, which is what the voters expect from us. I am sure we will not disappoint our people with this hope.”
The EU-brokered agreement will help Georgia continue the pace of its reforms, further ensuring the rule of law, increasing public confidence in a strong and independent judiciary, advance political pluralism, and jumpstart economic growth. Kuchava and Parliament will work closely with Prime Minister Garibashvili to develop and implement a long range economic development plan for Georgia.
Kuchava’s time in Parliament began in 2016 in the ninth convocation of Parliament during which he chaired the Committee on Environmental Protection and Natural Resources until elected as Deputy Speaker in 2019. He continued his term of office in the tenth convocation of Parliament as Vice Speaker.
Kuchava succeeded Archil Talakvadze, who announced his decision to resign from his position as Speaker and stated that the country “has a representative parliament and it is better for the parliament to be led by a person who was not a direct party in these negotiations.”
