On April 30, 2020, Georgia celebrated the 29th anniversary of the creation of its armed forces in 1990, with a decree on compulsory service for Georgia’s youth following one year later. The celebration was commemorated by Georgia’s president, prime minister, and other officials with a wreath-laying tribute at the memorial to fallen Georgian soldiers in Tbilisi.
Georgia’s Defense Forces rapidly became a modern fighting force capable of participating with its allies, in particular with the United States and NATO forces, around the world including in Kosovo, Central Africa, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Their strength, professionalism, and equipping were assisted from the beginning by substantial financial, technical, and training contributions from the U.S. Today the GDF boasts capabilities across the modern warfare spectrum, including in logistics, cyberspace, anti-terrorism, and disaster preparedness.
Georgia salutes the men and women in uniform on this important anniversary.
