Georgia took the Presidency of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe for six months starting from November 27, 2019 until May 15, 2020.
Georgia received the Presidency from France at a meeting of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe (CoE) on November 27th in Strasbourg.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Georgia David Zalkaliani held the meetings with the Secretary General of the Council of Europe, the President of the CoE Parliamentary Assembly and spoke before the Standing Committee of the CoE Parliamentary Assembly in his capacity as the CoE Chair.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs introduced four priorities of the Georgian Presidency to the CoE Committee of Ministers:
– Human Rights and Environmental Protection;
– Civil Participation in Decision-Making;
– Child Friendly Justice — Converging Experience on Restorative Justice in Europe;
– Strengthening Democracy through Education, Culture and Youth Engagement.
For the first time in the history of the country, Georgia assumes the presidency of the international organization has been granted the opportunity to contribute to upholding the values and principles of the Council of Europe.
As a part of European civilization, Georgia reaffirms its commitment to the basic principles of the Council of Europe by promoting democracy and rule of law, strengthening relevant institutions and developing civil society.
