Georgian wounded soldiers earned numerous medals at the Marine Corps Trials 2019
Georgia’s team of 12 military servicemen took part in 9th annual Marine Corps Trials 2019 for wounded, ill, or injured marines hosted by USMC Wounded Warrior Regiment in Camp Pendleton/CA between February 24 and March 10. Nearly 200 wounded and injured warrior athletes — US veterans and international competitors participated in the Trials to showcase achievements in various sports.
Georgia’s seated basketball team won gold in wheelchair basketball competition at the end of the competition. Overall, Georgia received 30 medals in various sports of the Marine Corps Trials:
· two gold, one silver and four bronze in cycling;
· one silver and two bronze in archery;
· four gold in track;
· one bronze in rifle shooting;
· one bronze in pistol shooting;
Georgians conquer International Judo Federation world ranking
The International Judo Federation (IJF) has published an upgraded world ranking list of senior male judokas in February. Seven out of the top ten are of Georgian origin. Five of them — Varlam Liparteliani, Guram Tushishvili, Vazha Margvelashvili, Amiran Papinashviliand Lasha Shavdatuashvili — compete on behalf of Georgia while the other two represent Spain (Nikoloz Sherazadishvili) and Russia (Robert Mshvidobadze).
Georgian Greco-Roman wrestlers lead U23 European Championship
Georgian Greco-Roman wrestlers under 23 won four gold medals and one bronze medal at the European Championship, held in Serbia in March.
The winners are:
· Nugzar Tsurtsumia- gold medal — 55 kg.
· Levan Kavzharadze — gold medal — 63 kg.
· Guram Khetsuriani — gold medal — 87 kg.
· Zviad Pataridze — gold medal — 100 kg.
· Beka Mamukashvili — bronze medal — 77 kg.
Georgia leads Rugby Europe
Georgia leads the Rugby Europe championship table after winning its second match of the new season against Spain with 24–10 score on February 18th in Tbilisi and then securing victory against Belgium 46–6 score on March 2nd in Brussels. Georgia’s National Team The Lelos returned to the summit of the table in newly launched Rugby Europe season, being the lead team in ranking ahead of Spain, Russia, Belgium, Germany.
Meanwhile, Georgia’s Under 18 rugby team defeated Spain in the final of U18 European Championship in the Russian city of Kaliningrad on April 20th and became Rugby Europe’s Champions.
Strongest man of Europe — Georgian weightlifter Lasha Talakhadze — wins European championship and sets new world records
Georgian weightlifter and Olympic champion Lasha Talakhadze won three gold medals in the European Weightlifting Federation’s championship, held in Georgia’s seaside town of Batumi on April 6–13. Talakhadze, 25, who is the Georgian and Olympic champion, took gold in +109kg category and set three new world records.
In total, the Georgian athletes ended the championship with four gold, six silver and three bronze medals. Batumi hosted over 325 athletes from 41 countries.
