Question: How are you handling the elections amid everything else going on in Georgia and the region?
Talakvadze: Now more than ever the Georgian people must demonstrate that nothing will stop us from free, fair, and open elections. Not a pandemic. Not Russian interference. I truly believe our democratic elections will anchor Georgia as an island of stability. We have an obligation to our citizens, our allies – to Europe and the US – and to peace loving people around the world to get this election right.
Question: Will everyone be able to vote, even if in a quarantine situation?
Talakvadze: Absolutely. Our government, led by Prime Minister Gakharia, has worked hard to manage the pandemic, and our efforts have been lauded the world over. More importantly, our people have risen to the moment. They have come together, banded together, and must now move forward together. The pandemic will not stop us, particularly when it comes to the election. Our Central Election Commission is working alongside our health authorities to make sure every person can vote, and that ever vote is counted. Whether you are in quarantine or being treated in the hospital, we will make sure your ballot is picked up, delivered, and counted. Voting is a sacred part of our democracy.
Question: Usually there are numerous NGO and other foreign election observers. What is happening this time during the global pandemic?
Talakvadze: As the leader of Parliament, I love meeting and hosting our international guests. I am so proud of our constitutional reforms that will make this the most free, open, and transparent election in Georgian history. ODIHR, NATO PA, OSCE PA, and PACE have already confirmed that they will observe the elections in Georgia. I have also been in touch with many virtual delegations. While these groups are unable to travel to Georgia, they are still taking a keen interest in our democracy. We look forward to those outside observers who can visit us here in Georgia; we have made charter flights available and will ensure their health safety as they observe our elections.
Question: How should we be thinking about some parties calls for the election to be postponed?
Talakvadze: First and foremost, Georgia will vote and our democracy will strengthen. Calling for the delay of elections is a page torn out of the Soviet past. Georgians are the real heroes during the pandemic: they have come together to fight against the scourge of the pandemic. Our people understand the severity of the crisis, and the need to stand together. Sadly, one great disappointment for me is the disregard of the major opposition party to respect basic health and safety guidelines as they campaign. They have held major rallies that ignore health protocols – no masks, no social distancing, nothing – which only endangers themselves and the rest of the Georgian population. This behavior is reckless. I believe Georgians know the best path to democracy and stability resides with holding our elections as scheduled on October 31st. I’m confident that this election will usher in a new era of parliamentary democracy and greater political pluralism.
