President Margvelashvili concludes working visit to Washington
In the framework of working visit to Washington, President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili held multiple meetings and gave keynote addresses at several US institutions. President’s visit aims to intensify dialogue to consolidate the support of the United States towards Georgia.
Bilateral meetings
President Giorgi Margvelashvili held bilateral meetings with US Government officials from Legislative as well as Administrative Branches.
From the U.S. House of Representatives, President Margvelashvili met with Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Congressman Kevin McCarthy, Co-chairs of Georgia Caucus Congressman Ted Poe and Congressman Gerry Connolly. During the meetings, President Margvelashvili discussed security threats that Georgia is facing from Russia and informed the Congressmen on the death of the Georgian citizen in de-facto Tskhinvali Region and called it an anomaly and injustice. Additionally, President discussed Russia’s aggression and a hybrid war in Georgia. President also elaborated on Georgia’s efforts to strengthen country’s EU and NATO integration.
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan thanked the President for Georgia’s contribution to NATO missions and praised Georgia for its democratic reforms.
After the meeting with a co-chair of the Congressional Georgia Caucus Congressman Gerry Connolly, President thanked the Congressman for his support and initiation of numerous resolutions supporting Georgia’s territorial integrity and aspiration for Euro-Atlantic integration.
In the US Senate, President Margvelashvili met with Senate Minority Whip Dick Durbin, Senate Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Ben Corker, Senator Robert Menendez, Senator Jeanne Shaheen and Senator Amy Klobuchar. Senators
President Margvelashvili also met with the US National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster. Parties discussed US-Georgia partnership and upcoming NATO Summit.
Conferences and Discussions
President Margvelashvili participated in a panel discussion at the Hudson Institute. The panel discussion gathered distinguished experts and think tankers who have worked on Georgia including Ambassador Daniel Fried, Ambassador Walter Russell, Ambassador Alexandra Hall Hall, Ambassador Bruce Jackson, Dr Richard Weitz, Dr Steven Blank and Dr Kenneth Weinstein.
In his remarks, President Margvelashvili highlighted the efforts of Georgia against the Russia’s hybrid war and emphasised the importance of robust US-Georgia partnership and Georgia’s contribution to global security architecture.
President Margvelashvili met with the students at the Georgetown University and gave a public speech “Georgia’s Path Westward: When Freedom is the Highest Value.”
In his address, President Margvelashvili reviewed the achievements and challenges of Georgia throughout the 100 years since the declaration of the First Republic of Georgia in 1918. President Margvelashvili described Georgia as a European country which holds enormous ambitions to become part of NATO and EU and to develop democracy and economy with the support from Georgia’s partner states. As part of the panel discussion, President Margvelashvili responded to students’ questions. Questions covered Russian aggression against Georgia, EU-Georgia relations, Georgia’s NATO aspirations, economic development and Georgia’s relations with neighbouring states.
President Margvelashvili hosted the representatives of Georgian diaspora residing in Washington DC area at the embassy of Georgia. The reception with diaspora featured the exhibition on the anniversary of 100 years since the declaration of independence of Georgia’s First Republic.
At the embassy reception for the friends and partners of Georgia from US Government, think-tanks and non-governmental organizations, honorary guest, former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright addressed greeted the President of Georgia Giorgi Margvelashvili. President Margvelashvili, in his turn, granted honorary citizenship of Georgia to the President of the National Democratic Institute – NDI Kenneth Wollack for his longstanding support and alliance to Georgia.
At the Capitol Hill, President Margvelashvili delivered a keynote address at a conference organized by Atlantic Council and National Democratic Institute. President Margvelashvili voiced his initiative for US Congress to adopt “The Georgia Support Act” to once again voice America’s unwavering support towards Georgia.
President Margvelashvili gave interviews to multiple media outlets, including Foreign Policy, Radio Free Europe, and the Voice of America. President Margvelashvili summarised his visit and once again voiced his initiative to adopt Support of Georgia Act in the US Congress.
