Georgia’s Independence Day has been officially recognized in the U.S. capital as Georgians and friends celebrated the country’s 31st anniversary of independence across America.
Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser proclaimed May 26 as the date for the annual celebrations of Georgia’s Independence Day in the U.S. capital, saying that the Georgian community was an “important part” of the social fabric of the city.
Georgian Ambassador to the United States David Zalkaliani expressed his gratitude to the Mayor for her decision by saying that he is “Delighted to see Washington DC celebrate Georgia’s Independence Day with us,” and thanked her for welcoming him back to the city after having served 20 years prior as a young diplomat.
In New York, Mayor Eric Adams congratulated Georgian New Yorkers, and Manhattan Mayor Mark Levine issued a proclamation highlighting the special role of the Georgian diaspora and community in New York City that proclaimed May 26 as “Georgia Appreciation Day.”
Celebrations were also held in other major American cities such as San Francisco, where the Georgian National Flag was raised from the City Hall and several buildings were lit up in Georgia’s national colors, and Philadelphia.
