Officials from the World Bank have praised the Georgian government’s commitment to economic reforms and its strong economic trajectory as the country makes immense strides in its COVID-19 recovery.
In a meeting with Georgian Minister of Finance Lasha Khutsishvili, the World Bank Vice President for Europe and Central Asia Anna Bjerde stated that many of the planned reforms, particularly in human capital development and the execution of a sustainable and digitalized recovery, will be “very promising for Georgia in the years to come.” She further stated that “the World Bank looks forward to supporting” the upcoming reform program and pledged to continue supporting Georgia in the implementation of key reforms.
These points were echoed by the World Bank Regional Director for the South Caucasus Sebastian Molineus, who in a meeting with Prime Minister Garibashvili said that “I am really pleased to see many very important reforms that are underway and being launched.” The World Bank official also stated that Georgia can be a leader “not only in the region but globally as well” as the government continues to push for regional connectivity and integration to allow access to the vast economic potential of the South Caucasus and Black Seas regions.
The positive reception of Georgia’s ambitious reform program and economic prospects comes as the country is in the midst of unprecedented economic growth, with Prime Minister Garibashvili saying that, “The economy is recovering at a rapid pace” and that, “Georgia will have the highest economic growth in the region and mainland Europe within the next five years.”
