The results of the most free, fair and open election in Georgian history indicate a decisive victory by the ruling Georgian Dream party. In declaring victory, Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia cited the Georgian people as the real winners as they took control of the destiny of Georgia.
All votes are counted and the Georgian Dream is expected to secure around 48% of the vote, with the main opposition party UNM on track for 27% of the vote. According to the Election Code, any party that clears 40.5% of votes is eligible to form the government, and 76 MPs are required to form a single-party majority in the Parliament.
Gakharia praised the remarkable job of the Georgian election commission that had to implement historic constitutional electoral reforms for this election while ensuring that every Georgian voter could vote safely and securely within the health demands of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Georgian Parliament Speaker Archil Talakvadze noted that the high voter turnout and calm and peaceful election is a “new opportunity to attract more investments and complete its path toward European and Euro-Atlantic integration.”
