Georgia continues to rank high in internet freedom. The Freedom House’s 2020 Freedom on the Net Report details that Georgia’s internet status is free and has improved in its ranking bringing the country from tenth to seventh place globally. The Freedom on the Net report provided Georgia with a score of 76 out of 100—scoring the same as countries such as the US, Australia, and Italy. Georgia’s internet freedom demonstrates the country’s leadership in the region as several neighboring countries such as Russia, Turkey, and Azerbaijan were determined to not have a free internet.
The Freedom on the Net 2020 report reviews obstacles to access, limits on content, and user rights violations to make a determination on a country’s internet freedom. Overall, the report underscores the significant role of an independent court in Georgia as an authoritative guardian of internet freedom in the country.
