The strength of Georgia’s global alliances was on full display as Prime Minister Gakharia had a jam-packed schedule of meetings in Brussels last week. NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg gave a huge boost to Georgia’s commitment to NATO when he told Gakharia that Georgia should “prepare for membership.”
At the same time Gakharia was conferring with Stoltenberg and NATO about Georgia’s long-standing commitment to stand “shoulder-to-shoulder” with NATO and Western allies, the Prime Minister had a round of high-level talks with leaders in the European Union. The PM and EU leaders had wide-ranging conversations on economic development, prospects for EU membership, global security and Russian aggression among other topics.
For his part, Gakharia praised the growing strength of Georgian ties to both the EU and NATO, declaring that, “Relations have never been better.” The PM thanked the EU for their unwavering support for Georgia during the pandemic crisis, including two financing agreements worth 129 million euros to fund Georgia’s fight against Covid-19, boost its overall macroeconomic stability, and continue democratic reforms.
