Since the onset of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Georgia has mobilized resources to support our neighbor and partner. To date, Georgia has sent approximately 140 tons of humanitarian aid to support Ukrainians impacted by the war and has used all available international forums to vocalize its support for the embattled country.

Georgia was among the countries to sponsor a resolution at the UN condemning Russian aggression and also voted to suspend Russia’s representation rights at the Council of Europe.

In a press briefing last Friday, the State Department Spokesman Ned Price acknowledged Georgia’s unique perspective on the conflict and its solidarity with Ukraine, “When it comes to Georgia… few countries understand to the same extent the potential implications and consequences of Russian aggression than a country like Georgia, a country that in 2008 was itself invaded by Russian forces,” and added that “[There are] many Georgians in the government and private citizens who are standing in solidarity with their counterparts in Ukraine.”

Additionally, the U.S. Ambassador to Georgia discussed Georgia’s “clear and unambiguous” support for Ukraine after meeting with Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili. “The United States welcomes Georgia’s clear support for Ukraine,” the Ambassador said after a separate meeting with the Georgian Foreign Minister and added that, “We should also mention the very generous donations by the Georgian people, the business community and the government, and the humanitarian assistance, as well as the support to Ukrainian citizens, including those here, in Tbilisi, Georgia.”

Georgia will continue to support Ukraine at all international levels and aid in meeting the humanitarian needs of the Ukrainian people. The Government of Georgia and Georgian society roundly condemn the unprovoked and illegal attack on Ukraine and its people.
